Spanish Formula One driver Fernando Alonso has announced that he has entered into a new sponsorship deal with leading lubricant brand Castrol.

In an Instagram post, the driver wrote:

“I am pleased to announce that I will be working more closely with the Castrol brand going forward. Castrol is a brand that has an amazing history in motorsport and produces a wide range of high tech lubricant products and services.”

He added that while in Australia, he had enjoyed driving a few laps in the Castrol supercar and that people could expect to see more from the collaboration in the coming months.

Alonso is somewhat legendary because in addition to winning the 2005 and 2006 World Drivers’ Championship when driving for Renault, in 2020, he also became the first Formula One driver to participate in the Dakar Rally. He later returned to Formula One the following year driving for the Alpine team, with him finishing with 81 points to put him in 10th position.

While the automotive sector represents only a portion of the market for lubricant manufacturers like Castrol, they often engage with motorsports for various reasons. In addition to the marketing opportunities from sponsorship, they often supply the fuels and lubricants that are actually used in race vehicles. Often these are specially developed in cooperation with engine manufacturers to handle the extreme demands on the race track, and the lessons learned there can often translate into improved formulations for consumer products like passenger car engine oil.
