Shell Alexia 40 XC gets go ahead from MAN ES

Having completed a thorough approval process, MAN Energy Solutions (MAN ES) has issued a No Objection Letter (NOL) to Shell Marine for its new Category II 40BN cylinder oil, Shell Alexia 40 XC.

Shell leveraged its in-house expertise in lubricant development, while also working closely with MAN ES, to create the unique proprietary formulation of Alexia 40 XC, which, as a Category II cylinder oil, is suitable for use with engines running on low-sulphur fuels (less than 0.5%), such as liquefied natural gas and very low sulphur fuel oil.

Shell Marine is of course focussed on serving the shipping industry, but it also benefits from Shell’s experience in industrial lubricants, with it also supplying familiar products like the Shell Tellus hydraulic oil for auxiliary systems.

Shell Marine’s Technology Manager for Marine and Engine Lubricants, Dr Luis Garcia, said that with reduced emissions being a focus of the maritime sector, the technology behind engines is:

“…continuously evolving to deliver higher efficiencies when operating with very low to zero sulphur fuels. Latest engine designs operate with challenging conditions in terms of pressure and temperature, demanding for higher performing lubrication, particularly in terms of engine cleanliness, making the development of a CAT II 40BN cylinder oil essential.”

He added that his company is dedicated to supporting the hassle-free adoption of cleaner fuels and more efficient engines in the maritime sector. The new product is now set to be gradually introduced at ports around the world from the third quarter this year.
