WAE and Castrol agree partnership for EV fluids

Lubricant maker Castrol and Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE) have entered a technical partnership to develop new high-performance fluids for electric vehicles (EVs) over the next five years.

As part of the deal, Castrol is set to become the exclusive supplier of fluids for WAE’s motorsport activities, including LMdH, Formula E, ETCR and Extreme E, as well as its expanding electrification programme. From May 2022, Castrol will also start supplying a specially developed EV thermal fluid for WAE’s high-spec motorsport batteries.

EVs have different demands to vehicles with internal combustion engines, so rather than using existing lubricants like passenger car engine oil, Castrol introduced its ON range of thermal and transmission fluids for EVs, as well as dedicated grease. According to the company, these can help EVs to go further on a single charge, charge faster by keeping the battery cooler and last for longer thanks to protecting components.

In a statement, Castrol’s Vice President for GAM and Marketing, A.S. Ramchander, said:

“As the world of mobility accelerates towards an electric future, it’s essential that we fully understand the requirements and challenges of electrifying all forms of mobility. By partnering with Williams Advanced Engineering, we hope to support the development of cutting-edge mobility solutions, as well as further advance our EV Fluid technologies.”

The CEO of WAE, Craig Wilson, also said his company was proud to be partnering up with Castrol. He expressed his belief that the advanced fluid technology that would be made possible by this partnership would find useful applications in more key sectors beyond motorsports.
