Why is it important to filter small quantities of oil?

One of the questions that is often asked about oil filtration relates to amounts less than 20 litres, and how they can be effectively filtered. This is a particularly important question when the lubricant in question is either expensive or intended for use in critical equipment.

Of course, filtering any oil is of the utmost importance for a number of reasons, most importantly being the prolonging the life of the lubricant life and the machine. Many people believe that new oil will be clean, but this is not necessarily the case, which is why when you buy new oil in any quantity, you need to test it and filter it as often as is deemed necessary. However, as you will probably know, filtering oil is only really practical when you have a large quantity of oil to work with. This is not a problem in most cases, as the vast majority of oils, such as those from Shell and Mobil, are delivered in quantities of at least 55 gallons. This can usually be cycled through a filter loop with ease. However, when you are dealing with a very small amount of oil, this method is much less feasible and you may not get the desired results.

Dealing with small amounts of oil

When handling tiny volumes of oil, which are either expensive or critical, you may need to look at alternative options for filtration. Something like using a portable filtration system, which was designed specifically for filtering small quantities of oil may be your best bet. These tools are readily available for purchase and are designed primarily for filtering lubricant in places that are more difficult to reach. Many of these devices are extremely light and very compact, which means they can be carried around in your pocket. Often, they are also customizable, so you can use them to great effect in a number of applications.

Due to their unique design, these devices have sparse hose lines and restricted flow-rate requirements. Not only that, but when you are using one of these devices, you are not sacrificing your ability to capture tiny particles or carry out an efficient filtration. You will also be able to filter the system in a fair amount of time.

Although using one of these devices may cause some lubricant to be lost in the filtration loop, the losses are likely to be minimal, and this is probably the best way to filter a small amount of oil should you need to do so.
