With the wildfires having devastated large parts of the Los Angeles area, oil major Chevron has pledged to donate $1 million towards relief efforts.

Chevron, which is a leading integrated energy company that also makes the Texaco grease and lubricant range, has a strong presence in the state of California, with it operating two refineries, pipeline assets, oil fields and other technical assets. It also supplies the fuel for some 1,800 retail stations in the state.

$250,000 will go to the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce to support rebuilding and disaster relief programmes, engage with the community and help businesses to recover. A further $250,000 is being given to the American National Red Cross to provide financial, material and emotional support to families affected by the wildfires. The remaining $500,000 will go to the California Fire Foundation to financially help affected residents and support first responders.

Chevron’s CEO and Chairman, Mike Wirth, said the company’s history:

“…in California dates back more than 145 years—with generations of employee families, operations and business partners throughout Southern California. We are heartbroken by the devastation in Los Angeles, inspired by the bravery of first responders and stand committed to assisting with relief and recovery efforts throughout greater Los Angeles County.”

Chevron says it will also match any qualifying donations that its retirees and employees make. It also says that where employees volunteer their time, it will also contribute financially to help communities in their hour of need.
