Castrol has announced Nvidia’s approval of Castrol ON PG25 and PG25T for direct-to-chip cooling.
Coolant fluids from companies like Castrol have long been employed to dissipate the increasing heat from evermore powerful engines and industrial processes. A similar principle now applies to data centres and AI (artificial intelligence) factories, with powerful chips and dense settings requiring a shift from air to liquid cooling. Fluids pass through cooling plates that are attached to critical heat-generating components like the GPUs (graphics processing units) used in AI factories. The system operates as a closed loop, so minimal water is lost to evaporation.
By validating that the Castrol coolant fluids meet its requirements, Nvidia has given stakeholders involved with data centres the confidence to use them in high-performance computing settings. The ON PG25 and PG25T coolants were subjected to testing in areas like the purity of the propylene glycol base fluid, thermal stability and resistance to corrosion. They were also tested for compatibility with the various materials they typically make contact with inside a liquid-cooling system. Castrol’s resilient global supply chain was also a factor.
Castrol’s global technology manager for data centres, Sung A. Kim, said:
“We evaluate every thermal management fluid under rigorous test conditions before it reaches the market. The validation from Nvidia confirms that PG25 (OAT) and PG25T (IAT) hold up to that standard, even at the scale and intensity of today’s AI infrastructure.”
Castrol said in a press release that the Nvidia validation marked a significant step in establishing liquid cooling as a reliable option in the design and operation of AI factories.
