France-based Total Energies has announced a final investment decision (FID) for its 20% interest in developing the Umm Shaif gas cap.

Production started at Umm Shaif in 1962, making it the oldest field offshore of Abu Dhabi. The new project will develop gas cap resources above the reservoir of the oil field. By 2030, it is expected this will enable daily gas production of 600 million cubic feet while maximising condensate production.

This could also strengthen the long-term growth strategy for gas production in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by unlocking a further 1.5 billion cubic feet per day of production in future. The project will limit emissions and lower costs by making use of clean power supplied from the UAE’s grid and existing infrastructure.

TotalEnergies’s chief executive officer and chairman, Patrick Pouyanné, said:

“We are delighted to reach this important milestone together with ADNOC and our partners. Following the recent award of the Bab Gas Cap concession, this FID marks another important step in developing Abu Dhabi’s significant gas resources. This development will contribute to TotalEnergies’ Upstream production beyond 2030 with low-cost and low-emissions resources.”

TotalEnergies, which also makes the Total coolant and lubricant range, has operated in the UAE for 87 years. The FID is particularly noteworthy, however, for making it the only non-UAE company to be active throughout the country’s energy value chain. It has stakes in many significant concessions and a number of liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects. It also operates a blending plant that supplies the wider Middle East region with lubricants.
