UK oil supermajor Shell recently celebrated a milestone moment at its Mars platform in the Gulf of America.
The deep water oil and gas site became the first standalone offshore platform in the region to produce a billion barrels of oil equivalent, which were generated over a term of almost 30 years.
An international operator, Shell conducts downstream and upstream crude oil activities like production, exploration, trading and refining in more than 70 nations worldwide. Crude oil is also employed by the company to create its lubricant brand, which is recognised as a global leader. The extensive line includes thousands of products ranging from cutting fluids and coolant and slideway oils for metalworking to food safe oils and greases for manufacturing plants.
Sited 200 kilometres off the coast of New Orleans in Louisiana, USA, the Mars deep water platform launched back in 1996 and was initially forecast to recover approximately 500 million barrels of oil. However, a spokesperson from Shell explained that a combination of technological progress and new discoveries had allowed the platform to now double expectations. Furthermore, Mars will likely exceed even this record-breaking milestone, as the platform is expected to keep producing oil for 15 more years.
Today, Mars is among the oil giant’s longest-running deep water platforms, and is integrated into Shell’s wider portfolio of assets for the Gulf of America, where it runs 10 individual production hubs. Expansion plans in the region include an 11th hub called Sparta, which is now being built with a scheduled operational start date of 2028.
