How can you improve the cleanliness of your oil?

Filters

When using industrial lubricants of any kind, be it Mobil Glygoyle 30 or Q8 Haydn 46, it is important that you keep your oil as clean as possible, as the cleaner your lubricant is, the longer it will last and the better your machine will perform.

There are a number of methods you can use to keep your oil, regardless of the brand, as clean as possible. Here are some of the main ones:

Clean when transferring

Cleaning lubricants when they are being transferred from one container to another, or from container to machine, is something of great importance, and one of the easiest ways to keep oil clean.

The best practice for doing so is to use a high beta ration filter (more than 200) at the correct micron size to achieve a decent level of cleanliness. Usually, this method of cleaning will require only a single pass, which means that it’s extremely efficient.

When using this technique, you must remember to use a high-efficiency filter, which has the correct lubricant flow rate and pressure for the viscosity of the oil you are using.

Use a kidney loop

One of the best methods for cleaning up oil that’s in a machine is to install a temporary online filtration system, which is often known as a ‘kidney loop’. This will clean lubricant in a machine of container very affordably.

Using this method, filtered lubricant will be returned to the sump from which it came, which means that it is mixed with nonfiltered lubricant. The cleanliness of the new sump comes about due to the mixed concentrations of oil.

Due to this, the lubricant must be pumped through the filter multiple times to get the desired results, and this could increase or decrease depending on the amount of lubricant present in the systems.

Consider modern centrifugal technologies

Although the two above methods are very popular and pretty simple to put into place, there are other popular alternatives that can be more or less effective depending on their use.

Modern centrifugal technologies, for example, can be extremely effective when it comes to improving ISO cleanliness codes and removing contaminants from your lubricants. These kinds of technologies are typically used to clean up industrial engine oils, where they are able to bypass the main filtration and oil circuit with ease.

If you are in any doubt about the best way to clean up your industrial lubricants, it’s a good idea to consult an expert in the matter before you plough ahead.
