The Malaysian state-owned energy and lubricant company Petronas has announced the delivery of three new energy-efficient vessels for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) from North America.
The announcement comes in the run up to the expected start-up of LNG Canada, in which Petronas has a 25% interest alongside other global energy giants like Shell.
This export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia will boast a harbour that is free from ice and has access to low-cost natural gas produced in Canada, enabling it to supply LNG to meet the world’s energy demand.
LNG has become an important part of the UK and wider European energy mix following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The plant, which is expected to come online later this year, will have one of the lowest intensities for carbon emissions in the world.
The three new vessels—which have been named Puteri Sejinjang, Puteri Mayang and Puteri Mahsuri—were built in Ulsan, South Korea at the shipyard of Hyundai Heavy Industries. Their addition doubles the number of LNG vessels that Petronas has dedicated to its operations out of North America. Each vessel can carry 174,000 cubic meters, and they are the biggest vessels in the company’s fleet.
Adnan Zainal Abidin, the chief operating officer of Petronas, said that LNG would be needed for the foreseeable future as a key element in the energy transition. He said the new LNG vessels demonstrated the company’s commitment to supplying its customers with this much-needed fuel in a reliable and cost-effective way.
