If changes are performed to soon, operations can waste lubricant stock unnecessarily and spend more time on maintenance than required.

However, if lubricant is left active and is no longer fit for purpose, it can result in increased friction and wear, overheating component damage, contaminated systems, corrosion, expensive repairs and total equipment failure at a loss to investment.

Hydraulic oil is defined as an incompressible fluid employed in hydraulic systems to transfer power. Available from top brands like Mobil and Petronas, it is usually formulated from a refined mineral or synthetic base oil that is then combined with specific additives to enhance its performance additives.

Beyond transferring power, hydraulic oil also serves as a source of lubrication and cooling, but it also seals system components against wear and corrosive forces.

Why is changing hydraulic oil important?

The practice of changing hydraulic oil periodically is crucial, as over time the lubricant breaks down and begins to lose the protective properties it provides, putting expensive equipment at risk of failure. Changing hydraulic oil when required ensures it continues to prevent mechanical wear, cleans systems of contaminants and maintains optimum system operating temperatures.

Factors impacting the lifespan of hydraulic oil

The key factors affecting the active service life of hydraulic oil are contamination, operating temperatures and depletion of additives. Typically lasting from around 2,000 to 3,000 operating hours under normal conditions, the lubricant’s breakdown rate is influenced heavily by mechanical and external stressors.

Indicators that hydraulic oil requires changing

Hydraulic oil requires changing if it shows signs of contamination, severe breakdown or loss of performance. Critical warning indicators include changes in colour, texture and smell, sluggish mechanical responses and unusual system noises.

When hydraulic oil is black or otherwise becomes darker in colour, it can be an indicator of thermal breakdown, heavy burning due to excess heat or oxidation. However, an oil with a cloudy or milky appearance is a direct sign that moisture or water has contaminated the lubricant in the reservoir.

Sediment and sludge are also strong indicators that an oil change is necessary. Debris or varnish build-up along the bottom of the system tank can mean that the oil has lost stability. If operators detect a strong sour or burnt chemical smell, the oil has likely chemically degraded working under high heat or pressure.

Advised change intervals for hydraulic oil

When hydraulic oil requires changing varies between industries, operating conditions and equipment. For instance, lubricant experts recommend hydraulic oil used in industrial systems is changed between 2,000 to 4,000 hours, while oil serving excavators and plant machinery should be changed between 1,000 and 2,000 hours. Heavy duty machinery and equipment used extensively and intensively outdoors where it is dusty, like machinery for agriculture, requires more frequent changes of between 500 and 1,000 hours.

Steps for changing hydraulic oil

The basic steps of changing hydraulic oil involves preparing the hydraulic system, then draining old fluid and replacing oil filters, before refilling with fresh product.

The system should be run for 10 minutes with control set for the oil to flow easily. The system can then be turned off with safety locks engaged before trapped pressure is released. The tank can then be drained by placing a pan beneath the drain plug. Once the plug is open, all the old oil can flow out. Retracting the cylinder will push any remaining oil out.

System cleaning involves wiping out the tank using clean rags that don’t leave lint. Old pressure and return filters should be exchanged for new ones. The fresh hydraulic oil can then be added through a clean filter to fill the port up to the top mark of the sight glass. The system should then be turned on and tested.

All handles should be moved slowly to bleed out any air, and the fluid level given a final check and topped up if necessary.

Regular oil sampling is always advised to ensure hydraulic oil change intervals are never too long or too short, and that equipment keep running at optimal performance.
