Together with its joint venture partners, TotalEnergies has announced a final investment decision (FID) for the full-field development of the Absheron field.

The Absheron gas field is located in the Azerbaijan portion of the Caspian Sea, about 60 miles from the capital Baku. The recoverable gas reserves are estimated at about 140 billion cubic meters.

An initial development phase came online in 2023 with an annual gas-production capacity of 15 billion cubic metres, together with daily condensate production of 12,000 barrels per day (bpd). TotalEnergies, which makes Total lubricant and coolant fluids, operates the field with a 35% interest, with XRG and SOCAR holding 30% and 35% interests, respectively.

TotalEnergies’ CEO and chairman, Patrick Pouyanné, expressed the company’s pleasure at announcing the FID for the project, which:

“…Unlocks the full production potential of one of the Caspian Sea’s largest gas discoveries. In line with TotalEnergies’ strategy, Absheron Full Field Development is a low cost and low emissions project that will provide a long-term additional gas supply to the domestic and international markets, supporting regional energy security.”

The new full-field development will approximately quadruple both gas and condensate production when it comes online in 2029. Four subsea wells will produce gas, which will be piped to a fully electrified onshore plant for processing. TotalEnergies says that the intensity of the Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions will be under 4kg of carbon dioxide equivalent per barrel of oil equivalent. Gas will enter the domestic market but also be transported to Europe via Turkey.
