Together with operating partner Eni, TotalEnergies has made a final investment decision to develop the Cronos gas field.
The field sits in Block 6 in deep water some 115 miles southwest of the Cypriot coast. It was initially discovered in 2022 and later appraised successfully in 2024. When it begins its expected production in 2028, it will be the country’s first gas development.
A new subsea pipeline will link the project with the Zohr field in Egyptian waters, and ultimately the onshore gas-processing and export facilities in Egypt.
Production is expected to stabilise at 500 million cubic feet per day, enough to produce liquefied natural gas (LNG) at a rate of 2.8 million tons per year (Mtpa). TotalEnergies, which makes Total metalworking and coolant products, also has interests in three other offshore blocks that may result in further production.
TotalEnergies’ CEO and Chairman, Patrick Pouyanné, expressed the company’s pleasure at progressing the joint venture with the backing of governments in both Egypt and Cyprus. He added:
“As Cyprus’ first gas development project, Cronos will support the development of a new regional gas hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, leveraging Egypt’s infrastructure. This new gas route in the Mediterranean will contribute to Europe’s energy security by diversifying its LNG supply sources.”
He also pointed out that the project was consistent with TotalEnergies’ preference for low-emission, low-cost operations, thanks to the use of existing capacity to process the gas. It will also help achieve the company’s 60 Mtpa target for its LNG portfolio by the end of this decade.
