Malaysian-based Petronas has built upon its long-standing supply agreement with Japan with a deal with the country’s biggest electricity generator.
Japan is one of the largest Asian buyers of LNG (liquefied natural gas), with Petronas delivering it there since 1983. Through a wholly owned subsidiary, Petronas will supply JERA Co., Inc, with around 2 million tonnes of LNG each year for 20 years from 2028, taking it well into the 2040s.
JERA is a 50-50 joint venture between two existing energy companies that transferred all their thermal power stations to the new venture.
Datuk Adif Zulkifli, the boss of Petronas’s maritime and gas operations and vice president, and Mr. Ryosuke Tsugaru, the head of low carbon fuel and senior executive at JERA, commemorated the deal in Tokyo.
Datuk Adif Zulkifli pointed out how much the partnership that has been developed with JERA over the years was valued by Petronas, which also produces lubricant products like agricultural oil. He said a common focus on reliability and mutual trust had formed the basis for this. He added:
“In an increasingly dynamic LNG market shaped by rising demand, supply security concerns, price volatility and shifting consumption patterns, Petronas remains focused on delivering reliable, and tailored solutions, supporting our partners in strengthening energy security while advancing their transition ambitions.”
A new generation of LNG carriers capable of transporting 174,000 cubic metres of LNG will be used for delivery. These were built in accordance with the superior emissions standards set down by the International Maritime Organization.
