Lubricating grease is a viscous, semi-solid lubricant that offers numerous benefits like reducing friction, remaining in position on moving parts and blocking dirt and rust.

A wide range of high-quality options are available today from top lubricant brands like Castrol and Petronas. However, selecting the right grease for an application is one of the most important aspects of industrial maintenance, as it can make a substantial difference to equipment performance and lifespan.

Two of the most used products available are lithium grease and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) grease. While these products might appear similar to each another, they have a different composition and specific strengths that mean they are suitable for different usage. Here, we discuss how these two common greases differ and the applications they best suit.

PTFE grease

A dedicated lubricating agent, the formulation of PTFE grease includes polytetrafluoroethylene particles. PTFE is also known commonly as Teflon. Consequently, the lubricant is also referred to as “Teflon grease”.

PTFE is a synthetic polymer that has outstanding properties like chemical stability, low friction and high-temperature resistance. The polymer becomes extremely effective after being mixed with grease. As a finished product, PTFE grease can then be used in a diverse range of applications – especially those where minimal friction is critically required.

Grease uses solid polytetrafluoroethylene, or Teflon, particles for an ultra-low friction layer, making it ideal for clean, precision or chemically inert uses.

The microscopic Teflon particles in PTFE grease fill in micro scratches on the surfaces of metal components to produce a slick layer of ultra-low friction film. This helps improve efficiency and minimises wear and tear. It can also cope with a wide temperature range, making it suited to extremely hot operating environments. It is classed as chemically inert and is non-toxic, while also being known to remain stable while resisting breakdown. This makes it ideal for a wide range of industrial applications, including food manufacturing facilities where there is a risk of incidental contact, as well as chemical processing sites.

Overall, compared with other greases, it stands apart because of its superior capability to decrease friction and work under high pressures and in high temperature environments. While other greases break down under such conditions, it can keep its lubricating properties.

Its properties also make it ideal when clean environments are required, as it does not attract and retain dust particles. It is highly suitable for use on precision parts, food grade equipment, sliding tracks and plastic components.

Lithium grease

A multi-purpose and traditional lubricant, lithium grease (sometimes called white lithium grease) is widely recognised for its thickening properties and high viscosity. Its formula uses a mineral base oil that is thickened by the inclusion of lithium soap. This makes the grease a stable lubricant to use at high temperatures and sees it applied to bearings, joints and chassis components. It has excellent properties for lubricating metal parts as it can adhere effectively to their surfaces. This ensures moving components stay well-lubricated even under harsh operating conditions.

Lithium grease can provide robust general mechanical stability and can handle high-pressure metal-on-metal contact well. It can’t deliver the lower friction coefficient and superior lubricity that PTFE grease offers, however, making it unsuitable for precision applications. An additional drawback of the grease is that it is sticky, so it attracts and collects dirt particles over time. This can make it unsuitable for dusty operating environments.

Advised uses include lubricating car door pivots, metal hinges, workshop tools, heavy farm equipment, garage door tracks and bearings.

When to choose each grease

If an application demands long-lasting lubrication in high pressure or temperature environments, or those that involve chemical processing, food-grade systems or precision machinery, PTFE grease is widely considered the best choice. While a more expensive product, it represents a wise long-term investment, providing solid returns through enhanced stability and performance.

A good all-rounder, lithium grease is an affordable option that can cope with metal-to-metal contact. When you need a versatile solution that can offer excellent mechanical stability and water resistance in general use applications, it is a suitable choice.
