TotalEnergies secures bio-feedstock through new deal

With the Paris Air Show bringing together the aviation industry, TotalEnergies has announced a new deal to secure feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

While SAF provides a means for airlines to reduce their carbon emissions without needing new aircrafts, it requires different feedstock compared to conventional aviation fuel. Indeed, to achieve much lower lifecycle carbon emissions, SAF needs to be produced from sustainable biological sources.

The France-based energy giant, which also makes the Total coolant and metalworking products, has therefore signed a 15-year deal with Quatra. Under the deal, Quatra will provide TotalEnergies’ biorefineries with 60,000 tons of used cooking oil each year.

TotalEnergies’ Renewable Fuels & Chemicals Senior Vice President, Valérie Goff, expressed delight at securing further feedstock through the strategic deal with Quatra, saying:

“The development of biofuels is one of our company’s strategic goals. By directly reducing the carbon intensity of the energy products used by our customers, we are actively working with them as part of our net zero approach, together with society.”

Quatra is a leading European company for efficiently collecting and recycling used cooking oil. Under the agreement with TotalEnergies, it will directly collect used cooking oil from restaurant chains, independent restaurants and industrial facilities. It will then filter the oil at its own sites before delivering it to TotalEnergies’ biorefineries. From there, it will be transformed either into SAF to meet the aviation’s growing demand or biodiesel for low-carbon road transport. The process exemplifies how a waste product can be transformed into a valuable resource.
