TotalEnergies’ CEO Patrick Pouyanné has officially opened the company’s new UK Offshore Wind Hub as part of the company’s Aberdeen offshore operations centre.

In a statement, Pouyanné pointed to how North Sea and Scottish energy projects had long been a core concern for the company, adding:

“I am proud of the success of our partnership with Scotland and of our joint achievements, in particular the development of the offshore industry. With the energy transition gathering speed, we see Scotland as a great place to broaden our relationship by investing in offshore wind.”

Pouyanné also said that basing its new UK offshore wind hub in Aberdeen demonstrated the company’s ongoing commitment to the North Sea and Scotland, as well as its faith in the UK’s renewables market.

Many well-known oil and gas majors like TotalEnergies, Shell and BP, which also owns the Castrol brand, have a shared ambition of becoming net-zero businesses, and this inevitably means transitioning away from oil and gas, although some oil production will remain to produce fuel and other products like compressor oil. By basing its new offshore wind hub within its existing centre, TotalEnergies will be able to easily transition staff from North Sea oil and gas operations to wind projects as the need arises.

The company has also announced plans for the new 2GW West of Orkney Windfarm, together with the Scottish developer Renewable Infrastructure Development Group (RIDG) and the Green Investment Group of Macquarie. The parties also proposed a £140 million action plan to develop related harbour and supply chain infrastructure.
