When seeking to decarbonise operations, most people think of electrification, but there are ways to improve sustainability without investing in the next generation of equipment.
Castrol is now offering its US customers a range of oils based on re-refined lubricants without sacrificing quality.
Speaking to FleetOwner, the CEO and president of Castrol Americas, Andreas Osbar, said there would be a diverse range of powertrain options for fleet operators to decarbonise their operations. He added:
“We believe, though, that a combustion engine—irrespective of what kind of fuel it takes—will have a long pathway still in the US. And for these customers, we have now something that helps them to lower their Scope 3 emissions for the foreseeable future.”
The Castrol MoreCircular range currently includes hydraulic oil, motor oil and transmission oil. It was developed in cooperation with Safety-Kleen, which has an extensive network in the US and Canada for collecting discarded motor oil, with at least 95% of this being processed in its refineries.
Castrol offers its business customers both the finished product and collection when oil reaches the end of its useful life. Safety-Kleen then collects the oil and re-refines it into usable base oils, which are then combined with additives by Castrol to make new lubricant products that are comparable with those based on virgin base oils.
It remains to be seen when the UK will see a similar scheme, but Castrol recently committed to offering greater circularity in its products as part of its new corporate strategy.
