US-based oil major Chevron has announced the discovery of substantial hydrocarbon resources in Block 0 off the coast of Angola.
The discovery was made in the Lower Congo Basin, which is known to be a petroleum-rich region. Chevron says its exploration well encountered more than 600 metres in gas and oil resources. Of this, 90 meters was found to offer excellent reservoir quality with good net pay.
Plans for a subsequent development will now centre on finding a cost-effective roadmap to production through a tieback to existing nearby facilities operated by Chevron.
Chevron’s exploration vice president, Kevin McLachlan, said:
“This discovery is another important milestone for Chevron’s over 70-year history in Angola. By combining high-impact exploration with infrastructure-led opportunities close to existing facilities, we are growing our resource base, creating value and demonstrating that our strategy is delivering, as well as our continued confidence in Angola’s resource potential.”
The discovery is the latest in Chevron’s exploration programme for the Sub-Saharan region, having built up its portfolio of promising exploration acreage over the past year. The company, which also makes the Texaco lubricant and grease range, produces roughly 300,000 barrels of oil equivalent daily in the region. With its exploration programme and established resource base, Chevron has expressed confidence in the region’s potential and expects to maintain and even expand production going forward.
Chevron operates Block 0 through its Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Limited subsidiary with a 39.2% interest. Other partners with working interests include TotalEnergies (10%), Azule Energy (9.8%) and Sonangol E&P (41%).
