The Indian arm of energy major Shell and green hydrogen firm Ohmium have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate in exploring the applications, opportunities, and markets for hydrogen, not just in India but also around the world.

Under the terms of the MoU, Ohmium and Shell India will establish joint working groups with the aim of assessing opportunities for green hydrogen in terms of technical, safety and commercial aspects. Ohmium’s proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers feature a unique design where modular units can be interlocked, making them easy to install and maintain. They are also a more flexible alternative to custom-built electrolysers.

Ohmium International CEO Arne Ballantine said his firm was excited to be working alongside Shell:

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Shell to explore green hydrogen opportunities and solutions worldwide. Shell has demonstrated tremendous ambition to become a net zero carbon business by 2050—we believe that green hydrogen is a critical component of that transition. We look forward to working with Shell to explore all the opportunities our electrolyzers enable.”

In addition to producing traditional fuels and lubricants like spindle oil, Shell also intends to help develop the global market for green hydrogen by exploring the most efficient ways to produce and store green hydrogen and deliver it to end users. Shell believes its collaboration with Ohmium has the potential to make its hydrogen projects more competitive and help achieve its ambition of halving its absolute emissions by 2030, before becoming a net-zero emitter by 2050.
