Integrated energy company TotalEnergies has announced that it has begun building work on the initial plant for processing gas from the Ratawi field in the Basra region of Iraq.

The associated gas from the oil-producing field is currently being flared, resulting in carbon emissions without any benefit. The ArtawiGas25 plant will instead process 50 million cubic feet per day of this gas, and supply it to gas-fired power plants in the area. This is expected to meet the demands of around 200,000 homes in the area around Basra.

TotalEnergies’s senior vice president for exploration and production in the Middle East and North Africa, Julien Pouget, expressed the company’s pride at launching the project. He said it would demonstrate a tangible benefit for the people of Iraq by reducing emissions while also boosting energy production. He added:

“Through this project, TotalEnergies is demonstrating its capacity to deliver valuable and fast-track solutions in accordance with the government’s expectations and the country’s electricity needs. We look forward to the next GGIP milestones in the coming weeks with the start of construction of the 1 GW solar project.”

TotalEnergies, which also makes the Total coolant and metalworking range, signed a deal in 2021 to implement the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP). The wider project is worth around $10 billion, and it aims to increase the electricity supply in Iraq while also improving how the country develops its natural resources. This includes the construction of a solar farm in addition to the recovery of flared gas from three oil fields.
