France-based TotalEnergies is to bolster its presence in the UK energy market by acquiring some solar and storage projects.
The integrated energy company announced the purchase of the project pipeline from prominent renewable energy firm Low Carbon. It includes two battery storage projects with 85 MW capacity and 350 MW of generation capacity through eight solar projects. The latter could be operational in 2028, given that they are already at an advanced development stage. They could supply the equivalent of 100,000 typical households in the UK with an anticipated annual production of 350 GWh.
TotalEnergies’ senior vice president for renewables, Olivier Jouny, said the company was happy with the deal with Low Carbon. He explained how the pipeline acquisition would increase TotalEnergies’ power generation footprint in the UK:
“The acquisition of these solar and battery projects located in the south of England will complement our integrated electricity portfolio in the UK, which includes 1.1 GW of gross installed offshore wind, 1.3 GW of gross combined cycle gas turbine, and more than 600 MW of solar projects under development.”
TotalEnergies, which was formally called Total, is traditionally an oil and gas company and a maker of coolant and lubricant products. It remains one of the biggest hydrocarbon producers in the UK, with it producing 121,000 barrels of oil equivalent on average each day – including more than a quarter of gas production. In the UK, it is also pursuing an integrated energy strategy that uses flexible power generation in combination with renewable energy generation.
