National Phoenix-based waste and recycling company, Republic Services, has now joined a brand-new lubricants recycling program organised by leading lubricant manufacturer, Castrol.

A spokesperson for Castrol has referred to Republic Services as the first firm of its kind to join its MoreCircular initiative, and added that the large-scale operation currently has a fleet of around 17,000 vehicles serving North America.

Castrol’s programme is designed to provide a collection service of used oil and a supply of lubricants with a lower carbon footprint to its business customers. The MoreCircular initiative was originally developed as part of a Castrol partnership with Safety-Kleen, which is a subsidiary company of Clean Harbors based in Massachusetts.

As part of its agreement with Castrol’s programme, Republic Services are to source lubricants from the manufacturer, like hydraulic oil, that are sold as lower carbon alternatives. It will also direct any used lubricant to Safety-Kleen for collection.

Commenting on the new agreement, CEO of Castrol Americas, Andreas Osbar said:

“Replacing traditional hydraulic fluids with the Castrol MoreCircular range will support Republic Services’ commitment to lower carbon emissions from its operations. By partnering with customers like Republic Services, we have achieved a first important milestone to creating a more circular lubricants economy in the United States.”

According to experts at Castrol, the used lubricants will then be re-refined to extract impurities and safely recover their base oils. The oil will then be combined with a special additive package to produce blended lubricants for MoreCircular to distribute.
