Chevron to commit $1 million for relief efforts in Venezuela

Following the earthquakes in Venezuela, US-based Chevron has announced that it will contribute a million US dollars for immediate relief efforts.

The oil major will distribute the contribution in cooperation with trusted humanitarian and other non-profit organisations already working in Venezuela. This will help provide water, food, shelter and medical support to the communities affected by the disaster.

The commitment is one of many from various sources, but it has particular relevance to Chevron due to its longstanding relationship and current presence in the country.

The chief officer for corporate affairs at Chevron, Laura Lane, said:

“Families and communities across Venezuela are facing real loss right now. Our thoughts are with our employees, impacted communities and the first responders working tirelessly to help. Chevron has been part of Venezuela for generations, and we’re standing with our people and communities as they begin to recover.”

Chevron, the owner of the Texaco lubricant brand, often tries to make a positive impact to the communities it operates within through social investment. This includes contributing to relief efforts following natural disasters. In recent years, Chevron has been the only US oil company allowed to operate in Venezuela due to sanctions, having received an exemption to allow it to recover a historic debt.

For its part, Chevron said it had accounted for all its employees and its facilities were operating securely. It said that these would continue to operate reliably and safely while also coordinating with local relief organisations and other partners to aid their relief efforts.
