While the two solutions typically contain a base oil and additive, they differ in consistency and appearance. While oil is liquid and free flowing, grease is a semi-solid lubricant that has been made more viscous with a thickening agent.
The unique characteristics of oil and grease mean they are suitable for different applications. For instance, oil is used to lubricate systems operating at high speeds that experience higher temperatures, as it can circulate effectively while cooling components.
Grease, on the other hand, is formulated to remain in place, making it ideal for slower systems working under heavy loads. Grease also seals out dirt and contaminants while forming a barrier against moisture, and offers better leakage control when seals get worn.

Exploring the composition of oil and grease and their physical properties
While oil and grease are both lubricants and share some ingredients, their composition and physical properties are designed for different usage.
Oil is a liquid lubricant. Its formulation is mainly made up of base oils (between 80 and 90 per cent) that may be mineral or synthetics. Oils also include an additive package with inclusions designed to either enhance or supress qualities in the base oils, or in some cases, provide completely new properties that the base oil is unable to offer.
Engineered to act as a fluid, oil has a low viscosity. This enables it to perform its role effectively, flowing freely to reach areas that require lubrication and penetrating tight spaces. As oil circulates systems, it cools down components, carrying excess heat away. It also traps debris from wear, cleaning moving parts and taking contaminants to filters.
Grease is a more viscous solution. Formulated to be semi-solid in texture, it contains less base oil (around 70 per cent) than oil. While it also includes additives to improve its performance characteristics, it features a thickening agent like a metal soap (around10 to 20 per cent of total formulation). The thickener works like a sponge, so that when the grease is under pressure or movement, it releases oil to lubricate and then reabsorbs it again at rest.
When is oil the best lubricant to use?
Machinery working at high speed requires effective heat management, or equipment can quickly become damaged. Free flowing, oil is the best lubricant when fast moving parts are involved. When friction creates high temperatures, oil can immediately dissipate intense heat, keeping components cool and performing properly.
Oil is the optimal choice for closed mechanical systems. Oil is typically used with a pump, bath or splash system operating, so it is continuously circulating and being filtered to remove contaminants. However, oil is also the go-to lubricant where components are easily accessible and require standard monitoring using sight glass and sampling and regular refilling.
When is grease the best lubricant to use?
Grease offers outstanding performance in applications where machinery must work at low speeds or under heavy stress. Under such conditions, an oil cannot maintain its protective film, resulting in excess wear – but a grease can cope effectively.
Grease is also excellent for lubricating exposed or vertical surfaces. Its tackiness lets its stay in place on hinges, gears and vertical parts without dripping off.
Providing a robust seal, grease is also superb for protecting metal components from dirt, water and other environmental contaminants and defending unsealed bearings in hard-to-access locations.
