What are hydraulic oils?

Non-compressible fluids, hydraulic oils are specialised solutions that perform a wide range of roles. Engineered for use in machinery fitted with hydraulic systems, they work to transfer power while keeping moving components cool, clean y lubricated. Available from some of the leading brands in the lubrication industry, such as Mobil, Millers y Fuchs, hydraulic oils are used in a wide range of stationary, handheld y mobile equipment.

Hydraulic oil applications

Hydraulic oils are used in earthmoving y construction equipment such as bulldozers y excavators, as well as in agriculture y forestry, where they are used in machinery such as log splitters y tractors. Many material-handling solutions also require hydraulic oil to operate, including forklifts y jacks, while industrial machinery such as hydraulic presses also depends on a steady supply.

Common types of hydraulic oils

In terms of formulation, hydraulic oils typically fall into one of three categories. These include oils with a mineral oil base, a synthetic base y biodegradable oils designed with sustainability in mind. Mineral-based hydraulic oils, made from refined crude oil, are relatively inexpensive y are used in most conventional hydraulic equipment. Synthetic hydraulic oils have a chemically engineered base y are designed to handle heavier pressures y tolerate a much wider range of temperatures, including high heat y freezing conditions. Finally, biodegradable hydraulic oils are manufactured for use in environmentally sensitive areas y are formulated using renewable materials such as vegetable oils.

Understanding the key functions of hydraulic oils

The most prominent role of hydraulic oils is power transmission. They efficiently transfer energy from the hydraulic pump to motors, actuators y cylinders, allowing machinery to lift or move heavy loads. As oils, they also work as lubricants, creating a protective layer between parts that move against one another. This helps prevent metal-to-metal contact y reduces unwanted friction, wear y tear. Hydraulic oils also serve as coolants, absorbing excess heat y carrying it away from crucial components. Finally, they can help seal parts y spaces within hydraulic systems, protect against rust y corrosion, y carry dirt y debris away so it can be safely filtered out.
