Integrated energy company TotalEnergies has announced the completion of a deal with Galp that will see it take over as operator for Namibia’s PEL83 licence with a 40% interest.
In return, Galp receives participating interests in two other licences. These include the PEL91 (9.39%) licence and the PEL56 licence (10%), which contains the Venus discovery. The PEL83 licence holds the Mopane discovery, which TotalEnergies describes as “giant”.
TotalEnergies, which makes the Total lubricant and coolant products for engineering applications, currently has about 70 employees in Namibia. It is in the process of building on this by seeking opportunities for low carbon developments, as well as operating a number of hydrocarbon licences.
TotalEnergies’ CEO and chairman, Patrick Pouyanné, said:
“We would like to thank the Namibian authorities for their swift approval of this strategic transaction with Galp, our new partner in Namibia. TotalEnergies’ entry as operator of the giant Mopane discovery marks a key milestone in our journey to establish a major production hub in Namibia.”
He added that the company now operated two of the country’s biggest discoveries of oil thanks to the transaction. He pointed to such productive licences supporting the creation of long-term value with a stronger presence in the Orange Basin. He said that in addition to developing the Mopane discovery, other opportunities for exploration were already being lined up.
The company will begin an appraisal campaign as early as this year, with a view to making a final investment decision in 2028.
