Wind turbine maker GE has officially endorsed the use of Mobil SHC Gear 320 WT in all its wind turbines, including all those currently operating.

GE tested the oil, which is available from Mobil distributors, over two years of inspections and field trials. GE’s process for approving lubricants involves over 300 detailed testing parameters based upon DIN, ASTM, and GE specifications.

According to ExxonMobil, it developed Mobil SHC Gear 320 WT in partnership with the makers of wind turbines. This resulted in a proprietary additive mix that effectively safeguards against the typical wear that occurs in wind turbines, such as micro-pitting fatigue and scuffing. It also does not promote the formation of white etching cracks. ExxonMobil recently extended the oil’s warranty to 10 years, from the current seven.

An ExxonMobil industrial equipment builder engineer, Mike Galloway, said about the development:

“GE’s approval is a testament to the performance of Mobil SHC Gear 320 WT gear oil – GE is one of the top three turbine manufacturers in the world and they have one of the most stringent lubricant standards in the industry.”

He added that with one of the best warranties in the industry, operators can clearly see how Mobil SHC 320 WT can help them to meet their productivity and reliability goals in the long run. He said wind farm operators could gain the peace of mind that comes from knowing they are using a gear oil that has been developed to safeguard against harsh environmental conditions around the world.
