Malaysia-based Petronas has announced the departure of the first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its LNG Canada facility in British Columbia, Canada.
The Puteri Sejinjang LNG vessel left for Japan from the newly operational facility, which marks a significant event for the company’s Canadian investment. LNG Canada was designed to produce LNG with very low emissions. It features advanced systems to detect and mitigate methane leaks and efficient gas turbines. It also uses renewable and hydroelectric power from the BC Hydro grid.
Compared to the global average for LNG plants, its emissions intensity is around 60% lower. It even beats the world’s most efficient existing plants with around a 35% lower greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity.
The chief executive of Petronas’ maritime and gas business, Datuk Adif Zulkifli, said:
“Petronas’ first cargo sail away is the culmination of years of perseverance to realise our vision for Canadian LNG exports to the Asia Pacific region. We are privileged to commemorate this moment with LNG Canada, our other joint venture partners, the Haisla Nation, Kitimat community and Canadians at large.”
He added that the company was proud to participate in the pioneering project. Petronas, which also sells lubricant products like the Suniso refrigeration compressor oil, says it is committed to supplying responsibly sourced LNG.
Petronas says its 25% stake in LNG Canada adds to its growing strategic supply network by connecting to its nearby upstream gas assets in Canada. The location on the west coast provides a convenient shipping location for serving some key markets in North Asia.
