The new President of the UK Lubricants Association (UKLA), Andrew Goddard, has said that in the transition towards a cleaner, greener future, the lubricant industry should not be seen as part of the problem, but rather part of the solution.
Goddard is also the Executive Chairman of Morris Lubricants, which is based in Shrewsbury and produces lubricants like industrial and agricultural oil. He accepted that the lubrication industry will face challenges in the transition towards cleaner technologies like hydrogen- and electric-powered vehicles, but he also pointed out that such vehicles will always need lubricants. He also highlighted how the industry has proven track record of constant innovation.
In addition, Goddard talked about how economies around the world will still need to manufacture goods and transport them around the world, and people will still need to get around, adding:
“Our sector can enable mobility, we can support the free flow of goods across national borders, we can underpin international trade and personal transportation if, and only if, we are seen to be part of the solution and not part of the problem.”
Goddard also said that the coming century will be defined by those companies that can take advantage of the nascent fourth industrial revolution. For the lubricant industry, this will mean producing ever-better lubricant products from renewable sources.
Many member companies of UKLA have already begun developing innovative products based on sustainable materials like maize, corn and soya, as well as hydro-based lubricants.
