Oil major Shell has announced it is to sell India-based Solenergi Power Private Limited, which includes businesses in the Sprng Energy group.

Sprng Energy provides Indian electricity distribution companies with power from solar and wind generation. Through a mix of contracts (1.7 GW peak) and operated assets (3.3 GW peak), it has a peak capacity of 5.0 GW.

Shell’s wholly owned Shell Overseas Investment B.V. subsidiary will sell the entirety of the group to Aditya Birla Renewables Limited (ABRen) for $1.8 billion. This includes both its commercial contracts and physical assets. ABRen is a dedicated platform for renewable energy in India with a mix of renewable generation and storage assets.

The president at Shell for renewables, downstream and energy solutions, Machteld de Haan, said the deal is in line with the company’s ongoing adjustment of its power business:

“We are high-grading our power portfolio and recycling capital in service of our asset-backed trading strategy outlined in Capital Markets Day 2025. This is another step in building a more focused, competitive and resilient business while improving returns year on year towards 2030.”

Shell says it remains committed to the Indian market with its LNG (liquefied natural gas) and mobility businesses. It will also continue its lubricant business, which supplies synthetic gear oil and other products for manufacturing.

Subject to closing conditions and regulatory approval, the deal’s completion is expected by the end of this year. To ensure continued operational stability and continuity for the workforce, the employees of Sprng Energy will continue working under ABRen.
