Dubbed “Shell DLC Fluid S3”, the cutting-edge product is specifically formulated to cool modern server hardware. It directly targets components that generate excessive heat while operating under heavy workloads such as central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs). It has been engineered to achieve the latest industry standards (PG25), ensuring it is fully compatible with a wide array of server architecture.

Data centres presently account for approximately two to three per cent of global power consumption. Experts at Shell state that the new product can enhance power usage effectiveness by as much as 27 per cent compared to conventional air cooling. As a result, it could potentially reduce the requirement for air conditioning systems, as these are usually energy intensive.

Shell Lubricants has also underscored additional benefits of the new fluid. These include an extended active service life, broad corrosion protection covering multiple metals and the inclusion of a fluorescent dye in its formulation to make leaks easier to identify.

Vice President for New Business Development at Shell Lubricants, Aysun Akik, commented on the new fluid. She stated that with the release of Shell DLC Fluid S3, the company was offering full-immersion cooling alongside direct-to-chip cooling. She added that Shell was not just ensuring data centres stayed cool, but was now driving digital infrastructure’s future.
