Energy companies SSE and TotalEnergies have entered into a binding agreement to establish a new joint venture to provide fast and reliable charging for electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK and Ireland.
The new player in the market will be branded “Source” and aim to achieve a 20% market share.
The business intends to install as many as 3,000 high-power charging points of 150 kW or greater over the next five years through some 300 hubs, which will be placed in strategic locations within, or at least close to, urban areas. Some of these are already being built, while dozens more are at the planning stage.
TotalEnergies’ senior vice president responsible for new mobility, Mathieu Soulas, expressed the company’s pride at helping to decarbonise transport in the UK and Ireland by supporting electric-based mobility. He said the company want to supply both personal and fleet customers with:
“…a nationwide, ultra-fast and reliable charging service that allows them to travel efficiently with complete peace of mind. This development also contributes to our integrated power strategy in the UK, combining renewable and flexible power generation capacity, trading and marketing of low-carbon electricity available 24 hours a day.”
Both SSE and TotalEnergies, the maker of Total coolant fluids, will supply renewable energy to the new energy hubs. Source hopes to build confidence among fleet owners and consumers about the reliability and availability of rapid charging infrastructures around the UK and Ireland, something that is cited as one of the major challenges to decarbonising transport.
