In Saudi Arabia, at the 2024 International Petroleum Technology Conference, Chevron has revealed how it is using a new tool for holographic displays.
This innovation comes as a way to better comprehend three-dimensional subsurface models. Oil and gas reservoirs can have complex properties, so understanding them can be challenging for experts like Saud Al-Otaibi, a senior earth scientist at Chevron.
He said this about the task:
“This is my passion. I’ve always been interested in learning about the unknown and explaining it to others.”
A hologram can now make this job easier by projecting computer images from subsurface models in three dimensions. This in turn helps scientists to make better decisions, such as choosing the best place to drill a well. Al-Otaibi said about this:
“You can use it to imagine how the reservoir works. You can see all these different properties in one 3D representation.”
Chevron, which also makes Texaco lubricant and grease products, said that it is the first time it has used holograms in this way. It claims the technology helps both accelerate and improve the decision-making process.
What is more, when teams at Chevron can better visualise the characteristics of a reservoir, they are more likely to predict drilling difficulties and pre-empt them. Al-Otaibi said people are amazed when they first see the hologram being used.
The technology’s applications are not just limited to exploration and production either. Chevron says it can also be used to provide training and improve safety, such as by providing a means for inspecting facilities remotely.
