Shell to build Pennsylvania petrochemical complex

Royal Dutch Shell, which makes Shell Tellus S2 M 32 and Shell Omala S2 G 320, has recently revealed its intention to construct a brand new petrochemical site close to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The oil giant has announced that construction on the complex will begin by the end of 2017, with expectations that commercial production will get started at the site in the early 2020s.

The new petrochemical site, which will have an ethylene cracker with a polyethylene derivatives unit, will utilise cheap ethane supplied by shale gas producers based in the Utica and Marcellus basins to generate polyethylene in the region of 1.6 million tons annually.

The complex will be constructed on the Ohio River’s banks, which are located in Potter Township, roughly 30 miles from Pittsburgh. Due to its proximity to the gas feedstock, both the new complex and the people who purchase polyethane from it will be able to take advantage of more dependable, shorter supply chains, in comparison to what is currently available in the area of the Gulf Coast.

The complex’s location is also perfect because almost 75% of polyethylene customers in the country are located within 700 miles of Pittsburgh.

Graham van’t Hoff, Shells Executive Vice President, said:

“Shell Chemicals has recently announced final investment decisions to expand alphaolefins production at our Geismar site in Louisiana and, with our partner CNOOC in China, to add a world-scale ethylene cracker with derivative units to our existing complex there.”

It is estimated that as many as 6,000 construction workers could be needed to build the new facility.
