TotalEnergies sells its distributed solar assets

France-based TotalEnergies has announced that it has completed the sale of around 170 MW of distributed solar-generation assets in seven European countries.

Such assets are small-scale projects usually below 3 MW, such as rooftop installations. The company says these are not ideally suited to its business model, so it will instead focus on achieving economies of scale through larger plants on a utilities scale.

The affected countries include France, Portugal, Luxembourg, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Spain and the Netherlands. TotalEnergies, which also makes the Total metalworking and coolant products, will no longer operate any distributed assets in the abovementioned countries.

The company remains committed to power generation despite the divestment. It said in a press release that it continues to build a portfolio with a competitive combination of:

“…renewables (solar, onshore wind, offshore wind) and flexible assets (CCGT, storage) to deliver clean firm power to its customers. By the end of April 2026, TotalEnergies holds nearly 36 GW of gross renewable power generation capacity and aims to achieve over 100 TWh of net electricity production by 2030.”

AMPYR Distributed Energy and Amarenco have bought the assets and will take over their operation to ensure that customers continue to receive an uninterrupted service. TotalEnergies insists that the divestment will not diminish its overall pace for developing renewable assets. It points to its gross renewable capacity increasing by 8 GW over the year, taking it to 35 GW. It plans to sustain this progress with the goal of exceeding 75GW by the next decade.
