Are antifreeze and coolant the same?

Category Metalworking Coolant Monitoring Equipment min

While antifreeze and coolant are sometimes referred to interchangeably, there are differences that exist between them. While there are similarities like their glycol base, their key differences concern their composition and the way they are used.

What is antifreeze?

Antifreeze is a concentrated fluid that is typically either propylene glycol or ethylene. Before it can see use in protecting equipment like a vehicle’s engine, antifreeze must first be diluted with water. The key role of antifreeze is to lower the freezing point of water and raise its boiling point.

It is critical that operators always check the specifications for their make and model before adding antifreeze to their cooling systems by consulting the owner’s manual.

Today, there are multiple different types of antifreeze designed for use in varying sorts of engines. While once these products were easily differentiated by the colour they came in, now there is an abundance of brands using a variety of colours, with no established colour coding system. As such, it is key for those purchasing antifreeze to pay particular attention to individual product details and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) recommendations.

What is coolant?

Ready to use, coolant is a finished product. Its formulation is a pre-mixed blend of water and antifreeze, usually to a 50/50 ratio.

As it is purchased ready for use, it can be added directly into the equipment’s cooling system.

The purpose of coolant is to circulate through systems and absorb heat to prevent various issues including freezing and overheating. However, its formulation also includes rust inhibitors that can mitigate iron oxide and corrosion, which can effectively extend the active service life of vehicle engines and their components.
