What are vacuum pumps?

A vacuum pump extracts gas molecules from a sealed space to create a complete or partial vacuum. They are essential in a number of industries, such as aerospace, medicine, metallurgy, electronics, biotechnology and chemistry.

Vacuum pumps are also useful for applications like packaging, coating, drying and filtering through vacuums.

What is vacuum pump oil?

Like any device with moving parts, lubrication and cooling are important for smooth operation. Vacuum pump oil is specifically formulated to meet the needs of vacuum pumps, and it typically has a high level of chemical stability and a low vapour pressure, so limited vapour is emitted by the oil.

Why is vacuum pump oil important?

The first function of oil in a vacuum pump is to lubricate moving parts like pistons and rotors and thereby reduce the friction between them. This in itself radically reduces wear on touching surfaces and heat build-up, leading to a longer serviceable life, but a good vacuum pump fluid may also feature additives to further prevent wear.

The vacuum pump oil may also help transport heat away from the moving parts of the pump and thereby prevent it from overheating.

Finally, a vacuum pump can only work efficiently if the various areas of the pump have no leakage between them, so the oil works as a sealing agent to help prevent this.

Are there different types of vacuum oil?

There are numerous types of vacuum pump, and within each type, there are wide ranges of different performance levels, applications and operating conditions. It’s therefore critical to match a vacuum pump with a suitable vacuum pump oil to get optimal performance.

Using an unsuitable oil will likely lead to subpar performance and possibly damage the pump. You may also need a food-safe product like the Fuchs Cassida vacuum pump fluid.

Is it worth using a higher quality oil?

Buying cheaper vacuum pump oils can sometimes be a false economy. For example, a higher quality oil may improve the efficiency of a system, meaning it uses less energy and therefore costs less to run.

Moreover, higher quality oils often have longer drain intervals, meaning less downtime is needed for routine maintenance and you order less oil in the long term, which can also help offset a higher initial purchasing cost.
