BP announces second hydrogen plant in Teesside

Oil, gas and energy major BP has announced plans for a second plant for hydrogen production in Teesside.

The planned HyGreen Teesside will produce green hydrogen and will be developed in stages, with an initial green hydrogen production target of 60 megawatts electric (MWe) by 2025. By 2030, this could rise to 500MWe if there is sufficient demand.

In a statement, Ben Houchen, the Mayor for the Tees Valley, said the development was another win for the region in leading the nation in creating jobs and communities that are cleaner, healthier and safer, adding that locals would benefit from high-quality, well-paid jobs and skills development for careers in future industries. He also said the region was rapidly turning into:

“The go-to place for innovation in the hydrogen sector, thanks to our status as the UK’s first Hydrogen Transport Hub and bp’s commitment to other schemes, such as H2Teesside. A second, even more low-carbon, hydrogen production project in HyGreen Teesside will further mark us out as a clean energy powerhouse.”

BP, which also makes lubricants like Castrol Aircol compressor oil, had already announced earlier in the year its plans to build the UK’s biggest blue hydrogen plant, H2Teesside, on Teesside. Blue hydrogen is produced from natural gas, but it also produces carbon dioxide as a waste product. H2Teesside will therefore seek to capture this and transport it for undersea storage through the Northern Endurance Partnership project.

Both plants combined could potentially be providing 30% of the 5 gigawatts electric (GWe) in hydrogen production being targeted by the UK government by 2030.
