Redcar and Cleveland College has joined forces with BP to offer paid scholarships for a two-year programme of engineering focused on green skills for the energy transitions.
School leavers who secure one of the 20 places will study at the Clean Energy Education Hub of the college, which will be opening this spring. During the programme, they will receive an allowance of £100 per week during term time. BP is investing heavily in low-carbon projects in Teesside, and the scholarships will help ensure the availability of suitably skilled workers.
Jason Faulkner, the principal of the college, said that he expects competition for places to be intense, given that it will enable students to earn straight from school while also enjoying the backing of an energy giant. The course will start this year in the autumn, but applications are already open for it.
BP’s head of country for the UK, Louise Kingham, said that with Teesside set to become a leading hub for low-carbon energy:
“…local people will be at the heart of that transition. That’s why we are partnering with Redcar and Cleveland College to invest in young Teessiders and provide the training they need to access high-quality low carbon jobs that will sustain the region for decades to come.”
