Castrol begins phasing in new packaging

With Castrol refreshing its brand image as part of its 125th anniversary celebration, it has announced that it will also begin rolling out new smarter packaging.

The idea is to promote more efficient logistics, clearer information and assured authenticity, as well as to reduce the amount of plastic used to make them.

Compared to the various small packs sold in Europe in 2022, the new five-litre packages, for example, should save about 1,000 tonnes of plastic from being used, because they comprise 20% less plastic.

The physical footprint has also been optimised. This means less storage space is required for inventory, and more units can fit on a pallet for greater logistical efficiency. Together with the new brand logo being introduced this year, product labels have been simplified to make it easier to identify the correct lubricant.

Castrol says it takes the authenticity of its products seriously, so it has introduced new measures to assure customers that a product is genuine. These include a foil heat seal, special symbols on the label, and a laser-etched logo and anti-tampering mechanism on the cap. Some product names will also be simplified to make their ranges easier to navigate.

The company says the new packaging is being phased in across its European lubricant operations over a relatively long period, due to it being a significant logistical endeavour. This means some products may still come in the old packaging, but Castrol says customers can rely on the same great quality, because the formulations are identical regardless of the packaging.
