US-based oil major Chevron has celebrated its century-old partnership with the state of New Mexico by sponsoring this year’s State Fair.
New Mexico is home to part of the prolific Permian Basin, where a large portion of the United State’s crude oil is produced thanks to technological advancements like hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, and horizontal drilling. Chevron has one of the biggest portfolios of assets in the basin, including in the southeast of New Mexico in Lea and Eddy counties.
Chevron, which also makes the Texaco grease and lubricant range, started sponsoring the fair in 2022, but it has been operating in the state since the 1920s. It says it understands how important it is to protect the state’s resources, such as by using renewable energy, minimising flaring and recycling water in its operations.
Patrick Killen, who works for Chevron as a senior representative for state affairs, said:
“Chevron has been here for nearly a century. We look forward to operating in New Mexico for many years to come. Our partnership at the fair represents both Chevron’s long-term commitment to the state and a celebration of New Mexico’s culture and heritage.”
A new record of more than half a million people visited this year’s fair, which included agricultural events and a rodeo. Killen said the fair not only served to provide cultural enrichment and entertainment. It also enabled Chevron to highlight its effort to build a low-carbon business in the state and engage with the community about innovation and sustainability.
