Fuchs, a leading provider of lubricant solutions, and E-Lyte, a former start-up, have come together to open the first facility in Germany for producing electrolyte solutions.

The new plant is located in Kaiserslautern at Fuch’s site, and has the capacity to produce high-performance electrolytes at a rate of up to 20,000 tons each year.

These electrolytes will be used to make supercapacitors and sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries, which in turn will be used in battery electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Fuchs has long been a leading player in the lubricant market and already provides coolant solutions for batteries. In May this year, it bought a 28% interest in E-Lyte Innovations GmbH, giving it entry into Europe’s rapidly expanding electrolyte market. E-Lyte has developed rapidly from a start-up to becoming a major European supplier of electrolyte solutions.

Stefan Fuchs, the CEO of Fuchs, explained that his company wanted to pioneer a new area with this strategic collaboration with E-Lyte:

“With E-Lyte, we have expanded our field of expertise and entered the battery market, a new area outside of traditional lubricants. With our expertise in the field of lubricants and functional fluids, we can now cover the entire demand along the life cycle of a battery.”

E-Lyte was nominated as one of the three finalists in the “Rising Star” category of the recent German Entrepreneur Award 2024, which recognises outstanding entrepreneurial activity in Germany. Its modern plant revolutionises electrolyte production with new processes that are more environmentally friendly and sustainable.
