ExxonMobil returns to NHRA racing

Race Track

After more than two decades of absence, ExxonMobil is bringing its lubricants back to the 2020 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), following an agreement to supply lubricants to the Kalitta Motorsports team.

While Mobil 1 is better known to consumers as a passenger car engine oil, ExxonMobil has developed a new variant especially for drag racing, and it will supply this to Kalitta Motorsports as part of the new agreement. It will also make engineering support available throughout the racing season and supply other lubricant products. What’s more, ExxonMobil will also seek to further develop its gearbox and engine lubricant technology for use in next-generation products.

ExxonMobil’s global motorsports and sponsorships manager, Kai Decker, pointed out how NHRA was the ideal venue to demonstrate the virtues of the synthetic lubricant technology used to produce Mobil 1 engine oils. He added:

“ExxonMobil last competed in NHRA back in the 1990s. Our return to the NHRA is the result of a true development and competition partnership between TRD, Kalitta Motorsports and our Motorsports Technology team at ExxonMobil Engineering and Research Company (EMRE).”

The general manager of Kalitta Motorsports, Chad Head, also expressed his excitement at the new collaboration. He stressed how the Kalitta team had worked with lubricant developers at ExxonMobil to develop new lubricants that fit in with the team’s long history of innovation in motorsports.

The 60th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals in February 2020 will be the first event of the 2020 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.
