ExxonMobil says Guyana production back on track

US-based oil major has announced that the consortium that it leads has returned oil production in Guyana back to full capacity following pipeline work.

Official data from the government in Guyana had revealed that production in the country was standing at 669,000 barrels per day (bpd) at the end of June. In July, however, the data pointed to production dropping to 400,000–500,000 bpd, indicating that work on a tie-in for natural gas production for two floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels had commenced.

This would be consistent with ExxonMobil’s earlier announcement that for two weeks, it would close down two offshore oil production vessels in July and August to enable a pipeline for a natural gas project to be connected. The pipeline is intended to supply natural gas to processing and power facilities onshore.

A spokesperson in an email to Reuters commented:

“We safely executed shutdowns of the Liza Unity and Destiny FPSOs to facilitate pipeline tie-ins for the gas-to-energy project. Both FPSOs are back online at full production levels.”

ExxonMobil, which also makes the Mobil range of coolant and lubricant products, said that no production had been lost, however, with it simply being deferred. The consortium’s third FPSO was unaffected by the pipeline work.

The Exxon-led consortium, which also includes CNOOC Ltd. and Hess, currently accounts for all oil production in Guyana, which is emerging as a major oil producer in the world. The consortium has further projects in the pipeline, and Guyana has been looking to attract other international oil companies.
