Following trials of its proprietary technology for taking plastic waste and processing it into raw materials for use in toys, food packaging and even furniture, ExxonMobil has announced it will build its first large-scale facility for advanced plastic recycling at Bayton, Texas, in the United States.
The plastics industry is a big customer for petrochemical companies like ExxonMobil, but plastic waste is a problem that urgently needs addressing, as it can take centuries and even millennia to decompose, and can cause harm to the environment in the process.
Once the new facility comes online before the end of next year, it will be capable of processing 30,000 metric tons of plastic waste each year. This may include the plastic packaging of many of the company’s own lubricant products, such as the Mobil Delvac and Mobil ATF ranges.
In a statement, ExxonMobil Chemical President, Karen McKee, said about the development:
“We’ve proven our proprietary advanced recycling technology in Baytown, and we’re scaling up operations to supply certified circular polymers by year-end. Availability of reliable advanced recycling capacity will play an important role in helping address plastic waste in the environment, and we are evaluating wide-scale deployment in other locations around the world.”
