TotalEnergies has announced that it has secured new production sharing contracts (PSCs), enabling it to explore four blocks in the waters offshore of Liberia.

The blocks were awarded after the Liberia Petroleum Regulatory Agency organised the 2024 Direct Negotiation Licensing Round. The LB-6, LB-11, LB-17 and LB-29 blocks are located in the southern portion of the Liberian Basin and together span an area of almost 5,000 square miles.

TotalEnergies, which also makes the Total coolant and lubricant products, will commission a 3D seismic survey as part of the exploration programme.

The senior vice-president at TotalEnergies for exploration, Kevin McLachlan, expressed the company’s enthusiasm at resuming exploration offshore of Liberia, adding:

“Entering these blocks aligns with our strategy of diversifying our Exploration portfolio in high-potential new oil-prone basins. These areas hold significant potential for prospects that have the potential for large-scale discoveries that lead to cost-effective, low-emission developments, leveraging the Company’s proven expertise in deepwater operations.”

The news comes shortly after TotalEnergies announced that it had been awarded three other exploration blocks offshore of Africa. These included two from the Republic of the Congo and one from Nigeria. TotalEnergies says it operates in around 120 countries with over 100,000 employees. It says it is dedicated to achieving greater levels of sustainability, reliability and affordability while delivering energy to as many people as possible. In addition to being an oil, gas and lubricant producer, it also invests in producing and marketing energy in the form of renewable electricity, biofuels, low-carbon hydrogen and biogas.
