
When metal surfaces are exposed to air and moisture, they become susceptible to rust.

Many rust preventatives also feature corrosion inhibitors. Chemical compounds, inhibitors are specially designed to prevent rust formation.
Corrosion inhibitors are typically polar molecules with a strong affinity for metal surfaces. As a result, they chemically bond with metal, creating a passive film to protect it against corrosive elements. Other inhibitors may also work by neutralising acidic substances that often contribute to rusting, offering an extra layer of defence.
Rust preventative components and their advantages
Many preventative oil formulations are engineered with surfactants called “wetting agents”, such as sodium sulphonates. These agents let the inhibitor molecules distribute evenly and create a stronger bond with metal surfaces.

While rust preventatives are required to protect parts made from ferrous metals like iron and iron alloys like steel, they can also impede rust on non-ferrous metals.
