Munich-based Klüber Lubrication, a leading provider of high-end specialty lubricant products, has announced a massive reduction in carbon emissions over recent years.

The company released its latest Sustainability and Responsibility Report, which outlines the progress in meeting the goal of becoming climate neutral by 2045. The 81.6% reduction relates to Scope 1 and 2 carbon-dioxide equivalent emissions at its sales and manufacturing sites. Its long-term goal, however, will cover the entire value chain and include Scope 3 emissions.

Klüber has a history dating back to 1929. It now has operations in over 30 countries employing more than 2,500 people. The company provides off-the-shelf products like grease and gear oil designed to meet relevant industry standards. It also formulates products to meet the specific requirements of customers.

Klüber Lubrication’s sustainability manager, Markus Hermann, said that limiting the effect of its operations on the environment was not the sole focus of sustainability. The company also needed to be providing value in the long term:

“…for our customers and contributing to a more climate-resilient economy. We believe it’s our responsibility to go beyond compliance and actively shape this transition. Our handprint already exceeds our footprint, and we’re working every day to strengthen it: through better products, transparent data and close collaboration with our partners.”

The next target for Klüber is a 90% reduction in emissions by 2030. Earlier in the year, and for the fourth year in a row, the EcoVadis Gold Medal was awarded to the company in recognition of its efforts.
