New jet oil chosen by Virgin Atlantic

Oil industry giant Exxon Mobil has confirmed that one of its top lubricants for jet engines has been chosen by Virgin Atlantic, to fuel its Dreamliner Boeing 787-9 fleet.

Mobil Jet Oil 387 is one of the most advanced products from a company that produces many innovative, high-quality lubricants, such as Mobil Unirex N3 and Mobil Unirex EP2. It has also received SAE AS5780 HPC specification approval, meaning that it is optimised for modern airliners.

This lubricant, which will be used in the turbofan Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines of the Boeing 787-9 fleet, has surpassed all previous performance levels for oils classified as High Performance Capability (HPC) during the testing process.

The head of the design organisation and fleet technical manager for Virgin Atlantic, Shehan Fernando, stated that:

“As we upgrade our fleet and incorporate our new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, we will continue to use ExxonMobil lubricant solutions to meet both current and future needs.”

He went on to add that the company had been particularly seeking HPC oil that provided the strongest mix of commercial benefit and levels of technical performance.

The sales manager for the global aviation oils department of Exxon Mobil, Frans Horjus, said that the firm had specifically suggested Mobil Jet Oil 387, because it represents the most highly advanced lubricant for jet turbines that it has yet produced. It also combined numerous performance advantages with an increasing number of certifications from the top manufacturers of engines and accessories.

With rises in time-on-wing, engine power, and operating temperatures, aircraft operators are searching for oils that can handle these demands.
